Prof. Dr. Rita Süssmuth was considered to be the most popular and trusted politician in Germany. Born in 1937, Wuppertal, to a highly committed Catholic family. She studied the Romance languages and history. Her postgraduate studies focused on educational sciences, sociology and psychology and in 1964 she completed her PhD. Süssmuth took academic roles at various German universities, she started to engage in politics in 1971 and in 1981 she joined the CDU Bonn district. In 1985 Süssmuth became Minister of Youth, Family and Health, and when the ministry expanded to include more female focused topics, Süssmuth became the first Minister for Women. During her 10 years as head of German parliament from 1988 to 1998 she was committed to family and women’s issues. Süssmuth has world with non-profit organisations and is an honorary doctrine from universities in Germany, Israel, France, Bulgaria and the USA.
